2008/8/21 Tyler's first Gundam

Tyler resembles his dad. He likes drawing, making model and playing with Lego very much. Dad bought him a box of Gundam model last week. He often asked for it. Because of the model, he took the initiative to practice piano.

This is the first model of this kind. I left the box of model, a model cutter and him in the Activity Room this morning. After several hours, he showed me proudly his product. He told me that Dad would set the model in a special smart posture. Therefore, he also did it. The posture was more cute than smart :) He wanted to give Dad a surprised. So he put it on Dad's studio at which Dad took photos of his beloved figures. I was not sure whether the idea of putting a background was copied from dad.

2008/8/18-20 Tyler Ocean Park Day Camp

Tyler did not get a place for Ocean Park camp at the very beginning. He was very disappointed. Luckily, additional camps were released. Both Jane and Tyler enrolled, just like last year.

Tyler made a new friend during the camp. He is a cheerful boy who is outgoing and lovable.

There was a 'graduation show' on the last day. Afterward, the little friends exchanged their contacts.

After the camp, we went to Kids' World for a while.

2008/8/8 Discovery Bay Sand Fun

This is a busy day for Faye. She went to Ocean Park Camp Day 3 early in the morning. Visiting the dolphins and playing games. Afterward, we went to TST to swim. On the way, we went to MTR Hong Kong station to use the toilet. She spotted the large Minnie on the wall.

While we were going to TST by Star Ferry, Trevor and Tyler were going to Discovery Bay.

They had lunch at a Japanese restaurant. Trevor was like '餓鬼投胎’. He cleaned up everything on the table like radish and ginger. Horrible!

Tyler climbed up a very big ball. He played various games and then engaged in water gun fun for over 2 hours. Unbelievable! He saw some older boys thrown the emptied gun into the large water pail and jumped into the pail right after. He copied and completed wonderfully. Dad and Wati could only keep their mouth 'O'. I missed that scene since I was riding the ferry to Discovery Bay after the swimming class.

Faye's classmate Enoch also went there that day. Enoch's sister Yan was a lovely and caring girl. She held Faye's hand and helped her in every aspect. Besides, she could express herself very well. When will my drm achieve this?

We had our dinner also at DDeck. What a happy and joyous day!

2008/8/8 Faye OP Camp Day 2

Faye often looks silly. Dad and I are complete different. I have negative thinking while he has positive thinking. I am very glad to marry to him since he often inspires me. I loved the song 'Both sides now' when I was young. The melody was very beautiful. But now I love this song much more since the lyrics is very meaningful.

This is the first time I take only Faye to Ocean Park. It is so easy to take care of only one child, especially a girl.

On the way we went to the bus stop, she discovered a lizard. She thought of Dad immediately. Guess why?

It is a secret!

Our reading habit - our wealth thoughout our lives

We have at least 30 minutes reading time every night before the children go to bed. Many thanks to my colleague Annie, who reminded me that reading was very important 4 years ago. I have to salute to Annie again because she introduced Letterland to me.

When Tyler was just 2 years old, I was on maternity leave. I had no pressure from work so I could try to build our reading habit. I bought Letterland ABC which introduced the 26 alphabet letterlanders and the 5 vowel men. I read a page with Tyler each night to learn a Letterlander. Since the pictures of the book was colourful and attractive, he liked reading it very much. Not only keeping the reading habit, but also learning phonics at the same time. Tyler was able to read the letter sound of the 26 alphabets and the 5 long vowels in one month. (Different child has different progress. Faye's progress is okay while my Trevor boy still cannot read with me for more than 5 minutes up to now.)

We did not buy any children books during the past 4 years. There are only second hand books at home. The major reason is that I am a very mean woman. Besides, the quality of the cheaper Chinese books are not good at all. There are too many difficult characters in the books. 青田 series is quite good, but the illustration is not attractive at all. We don't like books from Taiwan, although their quality is quite high. We don't like reading the Taiwanese pinyin. Besides, the language used by Taiwanese are quite different from that by us. We gave up Chinese books at the very beginning (but it was wrong!)

Including my domestics helpers' one, we have 6 public library cards. We can borrow at most 36 books at a time. I do not do this very often since 36 books are very very heavy. I visit the library every Friday night. Before I go, I ask Tyler and Faye which books they want to keep at home. After considering their opinions, I return some books and borrow some new books. Each time I borrow 10 to 15 books. I choose 1 to 2 phonics books. I like SandCastle First Rhymes series (J428.3) and Ladybird Phonics (J421.5). The illustration of the former one is better while the story base of the latter one is more attractive. With the help of Letterland, they can blend* some simple words like yes, clap, cat, god, etc by themselves at the age of 3 to 4.

*To blend a word is to mix each of the letter sound, e.g. m-o-p into the sound 'mop'.

Besides phonics books, I also choose a lot of English picture story books like Usborne farmyard tales. Although Faye cannot blend and understand the meaning of the words, she enjoys reading the pictures and construct the story by herself. She enjoys reading in her own way. I don't care whether her story matches the book. I only want to build up her interest in reading books. I pick those books with attractive illustrations so that she can expose more to pretty drawings. Of course, if I have time, I must read to her.

In addition to story books, non-fictions are also very important for broadening their horizon. Some of my favourites are A day in the life of ... series and Interfact ladders. The content is simple and short. You will not feel thirsty after reading the whole book.

In choosing English books, don't be scared by the books with many words like Interfact ladders. If you read carefully, you will find that there are more than one font types. The largest fonts are for young readers. The smallest fonts are for proficiency readers. Each set of fonts tells full contents of each level. For example, there is only one simple sentence on the top each page of Usborne Farmyard tales. It is easy enough for yound children to understand.

I have been using the public library for over 4 years. To choose books for my kids, I will target at 3 to 4 shelves, glance the books and pick up those who are not so old, not so dirty, with pretty illustrations and suitable font and fontsize. If I have time, I will go through the story to filter those books with unsuitable contents.

There are always 36 library items (CDs and books) at home. I don't expect my children to read all the books. This is just like a small library at home. They can pick the books according to their interest. Now Tyler can read most English books by himself. He develops deep interest in reading, especially those about space and drawing. There are not enough suitable books in the library for him. Luckily, a friend recommend a site to me. We can order good quality English books on line at unbelievable low price. But the problem is that you have to have a UK mailing address. Take a look if you are interested.

After insisting the daily reading habit for 4 years, I am quite contented to see how they are fond of books. There are always book report forms at home. Sometimes, they will do book report. Tyler teaches Faye what to copy in different boxes.

Besides, receiving a certificate from the library every year is also an encouragement to me. I hope they will keep their own reading record when they are older. There will be many homework when Tyler promotes to P1. I hope he still can spare time to enjoy his reading other than our bedtime reading. I wish very much that Trevor will eventually love reading books (not playing with them!)

2008/8/7 Faye's Ocean Park Day Camp

Last year, Tyler joined the day camp organized by Ocean Park. I did not regard it as a wonderful camp. However, to be fair, I let Faye join too. Early this morning, after dropping Tyler at HK Football Club to Jane's auntie, I hurried to Ocean Park. After some registration routines, the children finally queued up. Teacher Amy was a nice lady. Faye should enjoy her first OP day camp.

After the camp, Faye and I went for lunch and shopping. At around 4:00 p.m., we went to pick Tyler up. On the way, we walked past Times Square. Faye remembered those statues of discuss throwing. She pretended to be one of them.

這天晚上,韜韜向姐姐投訴:my friend is very noisy. 真不知到小孩子的思想及認知是怎樣的呢,究竟他說的 friend 是否指他的新同學,noisy 又是否真的 noisy 呢?我覺得十分有趣。

2008/8/6 Typhoon signal no. 8

It should be the first school day of Trevor's life. Unfortunately, typhoon signal no. 8 was enforced. Trevor's school and Tyler's YMCA day camp were both suspended. We had no where to go. It was so boring to stay home. Luckily, the dinner gathering with Cyrus and Xavier was advanced by 4 hours :)

I was busy in playing with the kids or chatting with other moms. Therefore, I could take only a few photos when the kids were busy at eating.

Dad stayed in Hong Kong due to the typhoon. So he brought Tyler and Trevor to meet us for dinner.

Trevor was quite well-behaved. He did not play with food at all. Wati, our helper, did not eat anything as usual. After the dinner, Cyrus treated us with homemade jelly. Tyler ate half of the jelly and past to Wati and said, 'Jie jie, you eat la. You did not eat anything tonight.' The words were so touching. He did possess a kind heart!
